Modalert 200 is mainly used to treat narcolepsy, excessive daytime drowsiness, and shift work sleep disturbance. Although it is not formally authorized for the treatment of sleep apnea, some physicians may prescribe it off-label to assist control of daytime drowsiness in patients with the condition who are receiving other therapies, such as continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP.

Sleep apnea disrupts sleep, which results in increased daytime weariness and poor sleep quality. By encouraging alertness and decreasing feelings of fatigue, Modalert 200 helps people stay awake throughout the day. The primary cause of sleep apnea, disturbed breathing while you sleep, is not addressed by it, though.
